Counterfeit vs Real

What is a counterfeit?

A counterfeit is made in exact imitation of something valuable with the intention to deceive or defraud. fake, forgery, copy, reproduction, replica, imitation, likeness, lookalike, mock-up, dummy, substitute, fraud, sham; phoney, pirate, knock-off, rip-off, put-on, dupe

Jesus said in John 10:9-10 ““I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Jesus the Door

Jesus is the Door

Let’s start at the beginning: We see in Genesis 2&3 that God put the man He had created in a garden. He placed Adam & Eve in the garden of Eden.

In Genesis 2:16 God commanded the man “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die”

The Tree of knowledge of good & evil.

Satan in the form of a snake tempted Eve, by saying to her. “Did God really say?” This is the same tactic that he still uses today.

When Eve saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom she took some and ate it.

God says in Genesis 22: “And the man has now become like Us knowing good and evil. he must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever”

What is a counterfeit?

It is something that is made to look like the original with the intent to deceive you into thinking it is real or genuine.
Some counterfeits are blatant but more often than not once we have accepted Christ satan will not try to tempt us with the evil side of the tree but the good side.
The Bible says in 2 Cor 11 :14 Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

How do we discern the counterfeit?

Analogy of the bank teller: Back in the day, bank tellers would be trained to spot counterfeit bank notes, not by studying and handling what was false, but by handling real currency, counting and touching it over and over again, so that if a counterfeit note went through their hands they would pick it up straight away.
In a similar way we are to so know God’s Word, and have it living in our hearts that we will discern a counterfeit or what is false when we come across it.
Hebrews 5:14 “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil”
John 8:31-32 “Jesus said to them, “You are truly my disciples if you live as I tell you to,  and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
If Jesus came to give us life and life in abundance, then a counterfeit is anything that we look to, to find life outside of Him. When we seek to fulfill our core needs for unconditional love, security and acceptance apart from Christ then we will find ourselves eating from the tree of knowledge instead of from the tree of Life(Jesus) Every false religion, self-help, every ism,  new age healing, secret society , and occult practice all seek to provide man with what he needs apart from Christ. What we need to know is that the fruit from the tree of knowledge may even appear good but it leads to death.
In John 14:6 Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Me”
We need to take back permission from satan where we have opened the door to the counterfeit by taking part in or even just by observing that which is false.
In essence, we are choosing to make Jesus our source and to trust Him to supply all our needs for Life.
Colossians 2:3 “In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Many counterfeits contain aspects of truth, their deception is subtle which is why we must remain in a growing relationship with the Holy Spirit and the Word.

Example of the bottles of water

bottle of water-example of pure verses counterfeit

If I presented you with 3 bottles of water and I told you that the first bottle contained 100% pure spring water and the second bottle contained 99% pure water and the third bottle contained dirty water clearly visible to the eye, for most of us it would be an easy choice not to drink the third bottle. But what about the other two choices? After all, they look the same, maybe you are thinking well 99% pure would be ok, its close enough, it looks like the first bottle of water and nothing is visibly different at least not to the naked eye.

But what if I told you that the second bottle contained 99% pure water and 1% sewage would you still want to drink it, knowing that it would make you sick.

In this Illustration the three bottles of water represent:

  1. 100% pure water – Tree of Life/Jesus as our source
  2. 99% pure water- 1 % comtaminant/sewage may be invisible to the naked eye. – The good side of the Tree of knowledge of good & evil. Still, leads to death.
  3. Dirty Water, clearly visible to the naked eye- evil side of the tree of knowledge.

Conclusion.

Jesus wants us to be free and to be full of His Life so that we can lead others to a life-giving relationship with Him. There is a world out there who are dying of thirst.

In Revelation 22:17 we see The Spirit and the bride(The Church) say, “Come!”

wedding-the pure not counterfeit

And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come, and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

cascade of pure water

In what ways are you drinking from a polluted source? Are you thirsty, maybe you need to come and taste and see that the LORD is good.
